John Nettles has maintained a presence on British and international television for close to 30 years now, making him an instantly identifiable figure. After making his debut as the Jersey detective Jim Bergerac in the hit comedy The Liver Birds (1969) in the United Kingdom, he rose to fame almost immediately and became a household name. Bergerac (1981) was an enormous success in the United Kingdom. It was exported to numerous nations throughout the world, including France, Spain, and Greece, where it garnered him hundreds upon thousands of followers. In the United States, Bergerac (1981) was a moderate success. His newfound fame as Bergerac earned him nearly movie-star levels of recognition and wealth, in addition to the adoration of thousands upon thousands of beautiful women. Even though Bergerac (1981) was cancelled in the early 1990s, the series continues to have a loyal following and lasting appeal abroad, particularly in Jersey, where images of John Nettles are still used to promote tourism attractions and other services. Even though the series was cancelled in the early 1990s, it continues to have a loyal following and lasting appeal abroad. Nettles has garnered critical acclaim for his polished performances of Shakespearean roles. Many people consider him to be on par with Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, two other British theatre greats. Surprisingly, he has never appeared on a movie screen during his long and successful career, opting instead to focus his efforts on the stage and on television instead. Recently, he has been seen playing the role of the straightforward DCI Tom Barnaby in ITV’s Midsomer Murders, a part in which he has enjoyed consistent popularity (1997). Tom Barnaby is a cheerful family man who, unfortunately for him, happens to reside in the most dangerous region of what is otherwise the stereotypically beautiful English countryside. He has stated publicly that one of his goals is to design a TV investigator who does not exhibit any of the typical tics. As a direct consequence of this, he is a cheerful family man who just so happens to reside in the most dangerous region of what is otherwise the stereotypically gorgeous English countryside.
